Stick Material

The rules state that the stick must be made of rubber, wood, gut, leather, fiberglass, nylon, plastic and any other synthetic material. Only the handle can be made of a composite, metal alloy. Recessed metal screws may be used to affix the head to the handle. The stick also must not have sharp parts or edges.

Head Shape and Size

The head of the stick is roughly triangular and is attached to the handle. The size of the head varies by the level being played, with a 6.5-inch scoop and a 3-inch head being legal in all levels of men’s play. The head of a woman’s stick varies from 7 to 10 inches wide. Both genders have goalie sticks in which the head is wider than the heads used by the field players.

Shaft Length

NCAA rules require that men’s lacrosse sticks (including the head) be from 40 to 42 inches long for offensive players, 52 to 72 inches long for defensive players (U13 ages and up)  and 40 to 72 inches long for goalies.
